Short Sunderland Mk III Flying Boat

A Short Sunderland Mk 3 flying boat of 10 Squadron RAAF. During World War II, two Australian squadrons operated Sunderlands from United Kingdom bases under the control of the RAF. The aircraft worked in convoy support, coastal patrol and anti-submarine roles and a number were lost in engagements with enemy aircraft. One such machine fought off an attack by no less than eight Junkers JU88 aircraft on the evening of 2 June 1943 before being beached by its crew in Cornwall. One of the crew of eleven was killed in the action. The aircraft was written off.
